Combined Training Report

We had two teams at the Area Combined Training at Tushingham on April 17th:
‘Unstables’ consisting of Siân Bates and Heather Jones in the 75cm, and Ali Harper (replacing Helen Hathaway with only two days’ notice as poor Del had a foot abscess) and Justine James in the 85cm

‘The Lightweights’ were Paula Jeffreson in the 75cm and Izzy Roberts and Cassie jumping the 85cm. This team only had three riders due to my own Splodgers being ‘spun’ for having an injection two days too early. Luckily I had scanned and sent a copy of his passport so I didn’t have to get him out of bed early.

In future I will scan and send all passports as this was quite a shock (and disappointment) as my vet had said it was fine. It just goes to show that we should double check.

Helen Hathaway and Gaynor Williams kindly came along in the (wet) morning and helped on dressage ring 2 which was a great help as it freed me up to help some of the other riders warm up for the jumping. Sharon James was also a superb support. Thank you all!

Both teams did reasonable dressage tests, despite a lot of noise in the outside arena and people walking backwards and forwards along the indoor. Ali Harper came a brilliant 5th overall with her super boy Jack with a total score of 36.1 and a clear round. In the other section, Justine came 10th with a total score of 34.4 with 2 time penalties, as did Paula in her section (35.5) and a clear round. Izzy came 11th with a score of 34.5 with a clear round, Siân came 16th with a clear round (score 38.8) and Cassie came 19th with a total score 56.6. Pity that she forgot the last fence, but we all have done it sometime!). Heather also came 19th in her section with 59.5 with Flicka jumping superbly.

The total individual scores ranged from 28.4 to 80.2 with several eliminations and retirements as the course did prove quite tricky for some.
In the future, we plan to do a ‘team’ course walk and I will also double check with all riders before handing in the declaration sheets as I had inadvertently misnamed the horse Ali was riding.

Four members of the club competed. They were Becky Woolley riding Ellie, Rachael Woolley riding Tia (Sister Becky’s mounted games pony), Caroline Hurley riding Chorister Girl and Vicky Robson riding Tempest River Queen.

Becky and Rachael competed in the morning in tricky, windy conditions. Both achieved reasonable dressage scores. Becky jumped a clear round in the show jumping while Rachael just rolled one pole. Both horses were far more enthusiastic in the jumping phase than in their dressage!!

I popped home for some lunch and by the time I returned to watch Caroline and Vicky in the afternoon, weather conditions had gone drastically downhill. I had difficulty walking from my car to the arenas, the rain had turned the ground into a wet ice rink!

Caroline and Vicky both managed to complete their dressage (though Chorister Girl did spend most of her test trying to turn her rear into the rain and gale!).

Sadly, but very understandably, both Caroline and Vicky decided to withdraw from the show jumping as the ground was dangerous for their horses by then.

Many thanks to all four for representing VVRC in very challenging conditions.
