Three of our brave members set off in high winds to head to Southview for the qualifier. We were lucky it was being held there as we were indoors.
Anne and Joy Higginson (Meg’s Mum) were the team helpers who had the job of being on the main arena gate all day. They enjoyed it though getting the best view of the arena.
Meg Higginson on Ella, Rebecca Furniss on Tommy and Angharad Williams on Gem made up the team because our fourth team member’s horse was injured and unable to take part.
The first round went really well both Meg and Rebecca going clear. Meg had 4 time penalties and Angharad had a refusal and time penalties. This resulted in 13 points in first round. In the second round, Rebecca had a pole and Meg was going clear until she had last fence down. Angharad had 2 poles resulting finishing on 29. The team came 6th overall out of 13 teams!
There were so many huge hunters and showjumpers in the Cheshire teams, against which Meg’s cob, Becca’s New Forest and Angharad’s little horse was quite intimidating, but they certainly put up a performance against the bigger clubs which they were very proud of?. Well done team!
We only had one entry in the Dressage to Music Qualifier held at Reaseheath College on Saturday 18th August.
Christine Hughes and her horse Nero did 2 great tests to come 2nd and 3rd in the novice an Elementary tests.
This year we entered a team for the 80cm and a team for the 90 cm and some individual riders too.
Unfortunately, we had to start a team of 3 for the 80cm as one of the horses went lame the day before.
Nicky Stokes had a great run and finished 9th, Siân Bates finished 13th but Gina Williams and Amanda Hopwood did not complete which put us out of the team event.
Sara Wright, who competed as an individual also had a good run and finished 7th on Justine’s Alton.
The 90cm did better finishing 8th with Myfi Powell finishing 3rd, Rachel Woolley 8th, Michelle Colohan 10th and Vicki Poole 14th in their sections.
Sue Jones and I competed as individuals, Sue finished 13th and I finished 14th. My cross-country round was particularly eventful; Jack pulled a shoe off causing him to trip which meant we had to circle in front of one of the fences and we were joined by a loose horse 4 fences from home!
I was a great day, we all enjoyed being out competing and it was lovely to see so many VVRC members out supporting our competitors.
I would like to say a big thank you to Julie Phillips and Rosemary Pyne who are no longer members but came and helped us put out the dressage arenas a few days before the event along with myself and Irene Gill. Also thank you to Sally Evans, Heather Jones and Dee Sides who delivered lunches to all the volunteers on the day.
Meg Higginson, Michelle Colohan, Rachel Woolley and I made up a team of 4 doing the 85-90 cm riding club team competition at Bolesworth.
The day was a wash out unfortunately – there was a huge excess of rain which turned the warm up arena into a mud bath. I think if we weren’t hunting regulars we would have had some difficulty! There were few clears and the class was massively delayed.
However Meg managed to do a lovely round with just 2 down, I was enormously pleased to get round with a double clear and Michelle had a green stop (as far as I’m aware). Sadly Rachel had to leave as she had commitments that evening and none of us were expecting the long wait.
Martha took some fab photos of us, and although there was a lot of waiting around we all loved the atmosphere of jumping at Bolesworth and really enjoyed ourselves – despite the poor ground conditions too.
When I came home I looked up to see how we’d done and it said Rebel had come 16th out of 68 which I was so pleased with. We were all very proud to represent VVRC at such a huge event.
Our showjumping team competed at Maelor in the Area 20 Intermediate Showjumping qualifier. Team members were Meg Higginson, Myfanwy Powell, Rachel Woolley and Michelle Colohan. The team finished on 12 points which put them out of the placings but all jumped well.
The same team is entered for the new BRC show jumping competition at Bolesworth International on Saturday 16th June. If anyone is not going to camp and is going to Bolesworth, please go and cheer our team on. Good luck ladies!
